The Jeanie B. has been logging serious miles since our time in Manteo. Our first destination was Edenton, a small town on the Chowan River about 50 NM from Manteo. We spent the day sailing west across the Albemarle Sound with great wind, and were able to arrive in time for an evening movie at the local cinema! Everyone enjoyed the chance to sit in the air-conditioned theater while watching Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, although the low in Edenton that night was around 60 F, an anomaly for this time of the year! We spent the better part of Friday exploring the 300 year old town, visiting the Original NC Supreme Court, where official meetings still take place, on occasion. We also walked through historic neighborhoods and visited the second oldest church in North Carolina: St. Paul's Episcopal Church. To finish off the morning, we headed to a local soda fountain for milkshakes and pressed sandwiches. After re-provisioning for the trip to Ocracoke, we departed Edenton for the Pungo-Alligator River Canal, which is part of the Intracoastal Waterway, or ICW, and is informally known as "the ditch". After sailing through the night, we arrived midday at Indian Island at the mouth of the Pamlico River, which feeds into the Pamlico Sound. After exploring the island and swimming, we enjoyed homemade spaghetti squash and french tomato sauce for dinner. Tomorrow morning, we plan to set sail across the Pamlico Sound for Ocracoke!
